About Interreg VI (2021-2027)
The regions along the borders are the connecting links within the European Union. Nowhere else is the significance of breaking through national state boundaries through European integration more visible. In order to interconnect the border regions even better, the EU has created a special funding programme: Interreg. Over the next seven years, a total of €8 billion in EU funds will be available for cross-border, innovative and socio-cultural projects across Europe.
The European Union has made part of these subsidies available to the Dutch-German border area between the Wadden Sea and the Lower Rhine. Within the subsidy area of the Interreg VI programme Germany-Netherlands, a total of more than 450 million euros can be invested in Dutch-German projects in the coming years.
What are the priorities?
As part of the 2021-2027 cohesion policy, four priorities (areas with thematic objectives) have been defined in the Interreg VI Germany-Netherlands programme to promote economic growth, employment, social integration and better cooperation in the border region:
1. A more innovative programme area
2. A greener programme area
3. Working together on a connected border region
4. A more citizen-centred Europe in the border region

These priorities are based on the national and regional strategies of the 15 programme partners and are intended to ensure the best possible development of the programme area. Each project falls under one priority.
This categorisation is done according to the priority whose thematic objectives most closely match the content of the project.

A Europe closer to its citizens in the border area
What are the focus themes?
Energy & Climate
High Tech Systems & Materials
Integration, Education & Labour Market
Agro & Food
Health & Care
The focus themes are also based on the strategies of the programme partners.
An expert group with representatives from business, science and government has developed an information sheet for these focus themes. This fact sheet is a document describing the most important challenges, developments and cross-border opportunities for the relevant theme area.
The document provides a framework for the projects carried out within this thematic area. All project concepts within priorities 1 and 2 are submitted to an expert group for assessment before the final application is developed.
The assignment of a project to a focus theme is not mandatory. However, it helps to use the available resources in a targeted manner, which will in turn lead to a higher quality of the projects. This is an important precondition for achieving the programme objectives in innovative and green areas.
Projects within the focus themes are not tied to a specific region within the programme area. Projects can be carried out at regional level, but also with partners from the entire programme area. The content and quality of the project are decisive for the assessment.
