NeoVitAI

The NeoVitAI project is a cross-border collaboration between healthcare providers, research institutions, and technology companies in the northern programme region. It focuses on creating the right conditions for the responsible and sustainable application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. To ensure NeoVitAI’s practical relevance, neonatology was selected as a showcase, with the Neolook ONE serving as a sufficiently developed, innovative, and flexible example. In this context, AI offers important opportunities for the early detection and prevention of health problems in premature infants.

This impact becomes visible in neonatal care, where the medical need for smart and reliable technologies is high. Premature babies require intensive and specialized care, with continuous monitoring essential to prevent complications. This care is complex and costly, and the shortage of specialized staff presents a major challenge. Without this highly specialized support, survival for these vulnerable infants is not possible. AI technology can assist by automatically analyzing vital signs, biomarkers, and video footage, generating valuable health information. Additionally, for families from rural areas in this border region, it is often difficult to stay close to their newborn child. NeoVitAI enables remote viewing, increasing their involvement and strengthening the bond with their newborn baby.

The collaboration between project partners from Northeast Netherlands and Northwest Germany enables effective integration of solutions into clinical practice. By closely linking healthcare, research, and technology, NeoVitAI develops practical, tailored applications that meet the specific needs of both regions. This approach not only accelerates the adoption of AI but also strengthens the regional healthcare infrastructure.

The project follows the full implementation trajectory, from data collection and preclinical testing to concrete application and implementation in hospitals, offering a clear roadmap with required resources and time estimates. By addressing legal, organizational, and ethical challenges, NeoVitAI contributes to improved patient care and knowledge sharing among healthcare professionals across institutions. This positions the region as a frontrunner in AI-driven healthcare innovation, with positive effects on both care quality and economic growth.

NeoVitAI aims to pave the way for broader adoption of AI in healthcare, enabling hospitals and other care organizations to implement technologies effectively and in a human-centered manner.

The project consists of seven work packages. WP1 Project Management and Coordination focuses on the efficient organization of the project. WP2 Dissemination and Networking enhances visibility and fosters collaboration. WP3 Development of the AI Implementation Handbook provides stakeholders with practical guidelines. WP4 Regulatory Guidelines ensures compliance with legal and policy frameworks. In WP5 Technology Integration, hardware, video, and AI technologies are implemented at selected test sites. WP6 Preclinical Testing evaluates the technology using a robotic baby simulator. Finally, WP7 Clinical Testing applies the solutions in real-world neonatal care, analyzing movement, biomarkers, and optical data.
