40% of the Interreg region’s total
\nenergy consumption, and associated CO2 emissions, are generated by the
\nconstruction sector. This is partly due to the low energy efficiency of
\ninstalled windows, which often falls short of current standards. Current renovation
\nprocesses are energy- and material-intensive and still do not provide optimal
\nuse of solar heat. To accelerate the renovation process and reduce the
\nresulting environmental impact, new circular window products must be developed
\nthat enable fast, cost-effective, and energy-efficient renovations.<\/p>\n
Within the framework of the
\nWINNOVATE project, innovative solutions for circular window renovation are
\nbeing developed for widespread application in the program area.<\/p>\n
A process for manufacturing 100%
\ncircular windows is being developed by reusing and recoating old glass panes.
\nGSF and TNO, with the support of Steinfort, are innovating their existing
\nprocess, which currently yields 50% circular windows, by developing new
\ncoatings that restore a clean and scratch-free glass surface and bring the
\ninsulation performance up to the latest standards.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, smart window films are
\nbeing developed for retrofitting existing windows with modern sun protection.
\nTNO’s patented SunSmart technology is being further developed for application
\non market-leading window films from Haverkamp and Koska. TNO’s technology
\nenables optimal use of solar heat by allowing it into the house in winter and
\nblocking it in summer.<\/p>\n
Baukreisel supports these
\ndevelopments with life cycle assessments, aiming to recycle used raw materials
\nand thus achieve a complete circular economy.<\/p>\n
The new
\nproducts will be installed, tested, and evaluated in buildings by De Alliantie
\nand Stadtwerke Münster, representative end users in the region. Regional
