

{"id":40912,"date":"2024-06-20T03:02:10","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T02:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deutschland-nederland.eu\/projects\/refarm\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T08:09:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T07:09:14","slug":"refarm","status":"publish","type":"projects","link":"https:\/\/deutschland-nederland.eu\/en\/projects\/refarm\/","title":{"rendered":"ReFarM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rethinking Farming and Manure<br \/>\nmanagement (ReFarM) aims to contribute to sustainable agriculture by developing<br \/>\nand implementing technology which locally improves the valorization of animal<br \/>\nmanure. The agricultural sector is under regulatory pressure and has the<br \/>\nopportunity to play a key role in key sustainability issues, especially in the<br \/>\nNorthwest of the EU. Northwest Germany and the Netherlands are among the<br \/>\nregions with the highest livestock densities and manure production. The ReFarM<br \/>\nproject aims to implement technological solutions to convert manure from waste<br \/>\ninto products such as fertilizer alternatives, soil improvers and renewable<br \/>\nenergy in the form of biogas. The recovered products can replace current<br \/>\nproducts derived from primary resources such as fertilizers from mining,<br \/>\norganic substrates from peat extraction and fossil fuels. The local reuse of<br \/>\nresources minimizes emissions and damage to the local environment, as well as<br \/>\nsoil contamination from the emissions-intensive extraction of primary resources.<\/p>\n<p>The reclaimed fertilizer<br \/>\nalternatives and soil amendments are designed to improve soil health and<br \/>\nfunctionality to support soil resilience to climate change. Soil health and<br \/>\nfunctionality are essential to sustain agricultural activities. In addition to<br \/>\nagricultural purposes, healthy and functioning soils also protect the<br \/>\nsurrounding environment and surface and groundwater bodies. The ReFarM project<br \/>\naims to tailor manure-based recovery products to soil needs, assess their safety<br \/>\nand lifecycle, and test them in laboratory and field trials. The recovered<br \/>\nproducts will be compared to primary resource products.<\/p>\n<p>Manure valorization and related<br \/>\ncircular and sustainable practices create new revenue opportunities for<br \/>\nagricultural SMEs. The cross-border exchange of best practices and valorization<br \/>\nproducts adds value and reduces financial and regulatory pressure on the<br \/>\nregional agricultural sector. The ReFarM project aims to evaluate new business<br \/>\nmodels for agricultural SMEs and to compare new scenarios with those currently<br \/>\napplied.<\/p>\n<p>This leads to the three following<br \/>\nmain aspects of ReFarM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Valorisation of manure through sustainable biotechnology<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening soils with recovery products<\/li>\n<li>Creating more sustainable and fairer manure management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The agricultural sector is the main target group of the ReFarM project,<br \/>\nwhich aims to sustainably treat manure and recover carbon, nutrients and energy<br \/>\nthat strengthen the soil and the entire agricultural sector. The valorization<br \/>\nof manure saves costs and supports sustainable practices, relieving financial<br \/>\nand regulatory pressures on the sector. The agricultural sector is represented<br \/>\nin the consortium by farmers and farmer cooperatives (MTS Broekroelofs, B.E.S.<br \/>\nGmbH and Agricycling). The farmers involved in the project are innovative and<br \/>\nprogressive, actively seeking sustainability in their operations. They will<br \/>\ntest the technologies on site and apply the recovery products in field trials. The<br \/>\ntreatment units will be showcases for the project and its field application,<br \/>\nbringing the agricultural sector into the process. The use of the technology<br \/>\nand the benefits to the soil can be seen on site and explained by people from<br \/>\nthe same sector.<\/p>\n<p>The agricultural sector is<br \/>\nembedded in society, bringing many stakeholders along. While farmers are the<br \/>\nlargest stakeholders, regional and national governments, tech providers, environmental<br \/>\nagencies and associations, knowledge institutions and general society play a<br \/>\nrole in at least one of the three main aspects of ReFarM.
