The<br \/>\nbiggest challenges for current batteries are:&nbsp; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The availability of raw materials. <\/li>\n<li>The cost of electricity storage and long lifetime. <\/li>\n<li>Safety and applicability for example in the built environment. <\/li>\n<li>Recyclability and circular application of raw materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Current rechargeable batteries generally use Li-ion cells.<br \/>\nThese cells can ignite and emit toxic gases. Moreover, the extraction of<br \/>\nlithium is a polluting process that uses a lot of water. Exergy Storage<br \/>\ndeveloped a new battery technology, based on common &amp; cheap raw materials<br \/>\nsuch as salt (NaCl), (recycled) aluminum and iron. These long-lasting batteries<br \/>\noffer the prospect of exceptionally low electricity storage costs and<br \/>\nrelatively low production costs. The technology is also suitable for realizing<br \/>\nclosed material cycles.&nbsp; <br \/>\nThe project objective: to scale up the battery<br \/>\ntechnology to industrial scale for prototyping and in preparation for pilot scale-up.<br \/>\nTogether with Fraunhofer Umsicht as &#8216;Berater&#8217;, the aim is to optimize the cell<br \/>\nelectrodes and performance. Becker Insulation determines what is effective<br \/>\nmaterial for insulating battery housings. In parallel, together with Stanstechniek,<br \/>\nthe manufacturing processes for battery components are being optimized and<br \/>\nscaled up. Finally, prototype batteries will be delivered and demonstrated in<br \/>\nrepresentative test environments of both Stadtwerke Goch and Hirsch&#8217;s new<br \/>\nsustainable houses.
