In the Kanalallee Denekamp – Nordhorn project, a cultural-historical route has been developed that connects Denekamp and Nordhorn. On June 22, 2022, the name of the cultural historic cycling route was revealed: Alte Kanalallee Naturtour. This 44 km long cycle route provides information about the history of the canal and its surroundings. To this end, various bicycle signs in Dutch and German have been placed that indicate the route and also contain information about the cross-border culture and historical elements. In addition, the cycle path connecting Denekamp and Nordhorn has been made safer and more attractive for tourists and visitors by widening it and allowing it to connect well with the Nordhorn part of the cycle path. The following components have been realized as part of the cultural-historical route:
1. Realization of the cultural-historical route (Alte Kanalallee Naturtour)
2. Placing information boards
3. Placing peat ship
4. Renovation of the ‘Komiezenhut’
5. Mowing the canal sides to improve biodiversity
6. Widening of the narrow bike path of 4.3 km in length
7. Placing a bicycle counting station
8. Construction of a boat dock
9. Setting up a joint marketing concept
10. Creating a route folder, also available in an app and online:
