COASTS: CO2-Abfang, -Speicherung und Transfer in der Schifffahrt

The project “CO2 capture, storage and transfer in shipping” (COASTS) was developed with a consortium of German and Dutch companies and knowledge institutions in order to develop and establish technologies for more environmentally friendly and less CO2 shipping on the market. The COASTS technology to be developed includes CO2 absorption and subsequent liquefaction and storage on board. The liquefied stored CO2 could then be transfered in the port and sold to potential end users. A comparable system of this kind is currently not available for shipping worldwide.

The aim of the project is to review existing stationary land-based CO2 capture systems and their adaptation for shipping. To achieve this, the consortium will examine the technical, financial, economic, logistical and legal framework conditions for the use of a CO2 capture and storage facility. This also includes the consideration of a meaningful energetic and structural integration of the system on board on the basis of different ship concepts and ship types. Should the results prove to be technically and economically viable, a structural implementation of a CO2 capture and storage facility on board is being prepared.
The project supports the transition to more sustainable and sustainable shipping through cross-border cooperation, thereby implementing the environmental and transport policy goals of Germany, the Netherlands and the EU in the shipping sector and contributing to achieving the climate goals of the Paris Agreement 2015.
